Luxury Apartment
A period apartment on the piano nobile of a building in central Milan. The original mouldings and panelled doors stay; everything new is white, and the colour comes from a single turquoise thread running through the rooms.
The building
A turn-of-the-century palazzo on a tree-lined avenue, with a stone ground floor and an inner courtyard paved in river stones. The apartment takes the piano nobile: the tallest ceilings and the deepest windows in the house.
Living room
The period features stay: ceiling mouldings, tall French windows, panelled doors. Against them, everything new is kept white — the sofa, the built-in bookcase around the television, the lacquered cabinets — so that the colour can come from one place only. Turquoise runs from the paintings of swimmers to the cushions and the pouf, and the blue backs of the open niches.
Kitchen
A single run of white gloss units under a dark grey worktop that rises to become the splashback. At the end, by the French window, a round marble table: the place where the day starts. Two pocket doors connect the kitchen to the corridor without taking up wall space.
Bedrooms
In the main bedroom the wall behind the bed is panelled from floor to ceiling, with crystal sconces set into the frames and an upholstered headboard in soft grey. A white dressing table and a round mirror sit beside the balcony door. The second bedroom keeps the same quiet palette and takes its warmth from a single coral painting.
Entrance and storage
The entrance floor is a mosaic laid like a rug. Along the corridor, mirrored sliding wardrobes double the light; behind panelled doors, a walk-in closet keeps the bedrooms free of furniture.
Study and bathrooms
A small study holds built-in shelves, a desk and a sofa bed, brightened by a yellow velvet chair. The bathrooms pair marble with glass mosaic: a whirlpool tub in the main one, a vessel washbasin and a heated towel rail in the second.
